Space, ASI Italian receiver GARHEO launched into orbit

GNSS GARHEO (GPS-GALILEO Receiver for Human Exploration & Operation), the Italian receiver resulting from collaboration between NASA and the Italian Space Agency (ASI), was launched on-board a sounding rocket from the Spaceport America, in New Mexico.

The receiver was developed within an agreement between ASI and the Qascom S.r.l. company, a SME based in Bassano del Grappa which has been operating for 20 years in the sector of satellite navigation and security, by manufacturing GNSS technology and solutions for space.

The experiment aims at acquiring and processing, in software mode, the signals coming from GPS and Galileo navigation systems in L1/E1 and L5/E5 bands, in a dynamic environment, such as that of a rocket in its launch phase.

This is characterized by its capacity of tracking multi-GNSS and multi- frequency signals to support the launchers, in general, and platforms in highly dynamic space environments, by exploiting a high number of satellites in visibility to optimize the choice based on their position, in order to improve expected performance.
