Food sustainability, the “FOODsens” project of the University of Bari ready to start

Supported by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, specifically under the Fund for Research Projects of National Interest (PRIN 2022), the FOODsens project has been recently launched at the Department of Soil, Plant and Food Sciences (DiSSPA) of the University Aldo Moro of Bari.

Developed in synergy by specialists in plant pathology, biotechnology, chemistry, microbiology and food science, FOODsens is a highly innovative project. It aims at introducing significant improvements in the food industry sector, by transforming quality monitoring and food safety. Thanks to three optical sensors platforms, FOODsens will provide a faster and more direct monitoring on food, thus ensuring greater food safety as compared to traditional analytical processes that are often slower and more expensive. Through real-time monitoring, FOODsens will be able to provide solutions that will reduce food waste ensuring greater sustainability of the food supply chain.

The project is the result of a large multidisciplinary collaboration: the team of experts from the University of Bari work together with the CNRISPA researchers and commercial partners of the Apulia region who provide FOODsens with a wider reach and innovative impact, by creating a bridge between academic research and food industry.

The wide-ranging interdisciplinary collaboration of this project makes FOODsens an excellent example of how scientific research applied to daily life can bring innovative benefits that improve the safety and quality of food for consumers all over the world.
