During the nineth edition of the Our Ocean Conference that was held in Athens from 15 to 17 April, four European ports received awards for contributing to the “Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030” European Mission: Antwerp-Bruges (Belgium), Ravenna (Italy), Heraklion (Greece) and Galataport (Turkey).
The “Restore our Ocean and Waters”mission aims at becoming climate neutral and restoring nature by protecting water biodiversity, reducing pollution, supporting a sustainable blue economy and developing the European Digital Twin of the Ocean.
The ports that were granted awards, assigned in cooperation with BlueMissionMed, the coordination support action of the Mission Mediterranean Lighthouse, were selected based on the following three categories:
- Building, Design, Construction, or Technical Sustainability Solutions: The Belgian port of Antwerp-Bruges was recognised for its commitment to sustainability across all operations, with notable initiatives including proactive dockwater level management, collaboration for water conservation, and measures to enhance water quality and biodiversity.
- Social, Corporate Sustainability, Community & Port Connectivity: The Italian port of Ravenna was acknowledged for its visionary strategies supporting the city’s green transition. Key actions include the development of a green port and energy hub, the creation of a maritime park, and emphasis on sustainable mobility initiatives.
- Eco-Conscious Entrepreneur & Personality: The Greek port of Heraklion and the Turkish port of Galataport (ex equo), were commended for their dedication and innovation in advancing sustainable practices within the maritime industry, setting a global example.
